Lullabies, Broadway-Style

February 5, 2010

When I was in grad school, I sang a mezzo role in one of our operas. A lot of the role was in my mid-register, which during rehearsal was proving difficult to project over the orchestration. That’s when the conductor shouted out from the pit, “Belt it out! Broadway-style!”And so, after a brief pause in utter disbelief at what I had just heard, I did just that.

Scarlett is not exactly what I would describe as a “mellow” baby. She likes to be entertained (almost all of the time), and I have found that she actually chills out and calms down when I sing. It can be opera, music theatre or even vocalizing, so to maximize my time, I use my practice time as mommy and Scarlett music time. And believe it or not, belting (big, loud, brassy belting) puts her right to sleep. The first time it happened, I couldn’t believe it, but I’m going with it.
